Field Trip to the CAC!

My professional practice class took a field trip to the CAC to see the MFA show and talk to some of the curators there. I was looking forward to seeing the MFA show as I know the grad students in the show and my friend Sarah works as a studio assistant for one of them.

I have to say I was not as impressed by the MFA show as I usually am. I felt that the work in the show didn’t really come together in a cohesive way as it had in the past. Individually, each artist’s work was good. But they didn’t quite add up to be more than individual pieces. My favorite work was Sophie Neslund’s. Her oozing ceramic vases and body image wall paper were so imaginative and provocative. The presentation of her work took advantage of the amazing space. She effectively created an environment.

The exhibit of Do ho Suh’s work on the other floors was enthralling. He too is concerned with environments, although he recreates whole hallways out of the most diaphanous silk. His amazing attention to detail, evident in the sprinklers and door jambs he painstakingly recreates, really transport you to another world. It was truly breathtaking.
